'Avatar' finally loses top box office spot to 'Dear John'

"Avatar" came in second, with a healthy $23.6 million.

(UPI) - "Avatar" was finally knocked out of the No. 1 spot during the weekend, with "Dear John" raking in $32.4 million to top the U.S. box office.

"Avatar" was second with a healthy $23.6 million. The innovative new film had led the box office for seven straight weekends.

All estimated gross box office figures are from Box Office Mojo.

"From Paris with Love" was third with $8.12 million; "Edge of Darkness" fourth with more than $7 million; "Tooth Fairy" fifth with $6.5 million; "When in Rome" sixth with $5.5 million.

"The Book of Eli" was seventh with more than$4.83 million; "Crazy Heart" eighth with $3.65 million; "Legion (2010)" ninth with $3.4 million.

"Sherlock Holmes" was 10th with $2.63 million.
